ECAC has cancelled its New Year Evening Party scheduled for September 9, 2016 at Holliday Inn Chicago North Shore. ECAC decided to cancel this festive event to take a pose and commemorate hundreds of Ethiopians massacred in Ethiopia in the course of putting up peaceful protests and demonstrations in various parts of the country, notably, in Amhara and Oromia regions of Ethiopia. As we speak, thousands of Ethiopians in the various urban and rural areas are under detentions of security authorities. Many more are under situations of political instability and turmoil as they face regime’s armed security and military operations in their villages.
While ECAC has maintained a long tradition of celebrating the Ethiopian New Year with great festivity and cultural music and dance, this year, the Board has unanimously decided to cancel the more festive occasion of the New Year party. ECAC joins all Ethiopians and Ethiopian Americans to show its concern and to hold vigils and prayers for those who have lost their lives and those facing turmoil.
However, ECAC will continue to celebrate the Ethiopian Day Celebration at the Daley Plaza on Thursday, September 8, 2016 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM with full display of the Ethiopian Flag Raising Ceremony, Cultural and traditional songs and performances of the Children’s Cultural Dance Troup.
We call on all Ethiopians in Chicagoland areas to come out in full force and join us to celebrate the Ethiopian Day and the Ethiopian New Year on Thursday, with a sense of solidarity and national unity.
